Nowadays there is a wide network of higher education institutions, comprising universities and polytechnics that are part of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), offering a broad range of study programmes for students.

You may apply for the student visa at the competent representative authority at the earliest six months before your planned travel date. You should not apply later than 15 calendar days before your planned stay.

Non-EU students on Portuguese student visa and residence permits are allowed to work in Portugal subject to authorisation from the SEF.

You can also request permission to undertake research work, academic teaching or engage in highly qualified activities provided you have the necessary skills and qualifications.
